The Pirates of Dark Water for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a 16-bit side-scrolling beat 'em up developed and published by Sunsoft in 1994. Based closely on the popular Hanna-Barbera animated series of the same name, the game tasks players with saving the watery alien world of Mer from being consumed by a corrupting substance known as the Dark Water.

Game Overview

  • The Plot: Players control Prince Ren and his companions as they journey across Mer to collect the Thirteen Treasures of Rule. These ancient relics hold the power to control the Dark Water and restore the kingdom of Octopon to its former glory. Standing in their way is the evil pirate-lord Bloth and his ruthless crew aboard the massive ship, the Maelstrom.
  • Gameplay Style: Modeled after classic arcade brawlers like Final Fight and Streets of Rage, the game features 1-to-2 player simultaneous cooperative play. Players fight through eight brutal stages packed with aggressive pirate hordes, environmental hazards, and boss fights.

Playable Characters

The game features three selectable heroes, each permanently armed with a signature weapon and possessing distinct attributes:

Character

Class Type

Attributes

Ren

All-Rounder

Balanced speed and strength; the standard hero archetype.

Tula

Speedy / Agility

Fast-moving ecomancer with quick attacks, but deals lower damage.

Ioz

Powerhouse

A hardened ex-pirate who is slow but delivers devastatingly strong strikes.

Key Features & Mechanics

  • Combat System: Controls utilize basic combinations, quick and heavy attacks, blocks, grapples, and unique character-specific super moves.
  • Environmental Exploits: Stages feature pits and spiked traps that players can intentionally throw enemies into for quick, satisfying defeats.
  • Audio & Visuals: The game is widely recognized for its high-quality character sprites, detailed multi-layered backgrounds, and hand-drawn cinematic cutscenes that capture the look of the cartoon.
  • Genre Twist: While primarily a brawler, the game breaks up the monotony with a unique, shoot-'em-up (shmup) style aerial dragon-riding stage.
